Botox and Juvederm products are available to enhance and maintain the complete look of your facial and dental esthetics. These types of esthetic treatments have become the number one and two most performed cosmetic procedures in the United States, as determined from statistics from the American Society for Aesthete Plastic Surgery.
Botox is derived from bacteria and has been approved for many therapeutic uses by the FDA. It slows or decreases localized muscle activity by reducing nervous system chemicals from stimulating muscle activity. Duration of action is typically 3 to 4 months, depending on each individual.
Wrinkling and loss of facial volume is a prominent feature of aging. Over time skin collagen and the natural elastic fibers are decreased by sun exposure, smoking and hyper muscle activity. Initially lines in the skin are seen only during facial muscle activity, (i.e. frowning, laughing, smiling). As skin ages these lines become visible even when there is no muscle activity and are known as static lines. Once lines become static, they are visible at all times.
Botox is used to reduce or slow the muscle activity which is responsible for the location of the line formation. Deeper lines may require repeated dosing to see significant improvement. Very deep lines may not be completely resolved with Botox treatments alone. Juvederm is used to treat deeper static lines which are not responsive to Botox or facial folds and contours that become deeper over time. Often, the best results can be achieved with a combination treatment of these two products.
Botox can also be a very beneficial treatment for Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD). This is one of the more recent treatments for TMD. Through the use of Botox injections, the muscle activity in the areas associated with chronic muscle pain is significantly reduced or eliminated in some cases.
Juvederm is a synthetic hyaluronic acid compliment, which helps to stimulate production of the body’s own hyaluronic acid. It has been approved by the FDA for use in treating deep static lines and sculpting areas of the face where volume loss has caused a bottom heavy appearance of the face. Juvederm will usually last for 4 to 12 months, again depending on the individual patient. Juvederm is also reversible.
